The winners and losers this season

So there you go: the last match day of the 2010-2011 season has been played, and the 18 Bundesliga teams is divided into two camps – the winners and the losers. Nevertheless, deciding which teams belong to which category is a matter of personal interpretation – and here’s mine.

Winners
The biggest winners are, of course, Borussia Dortmund. They won the league and deserved to do so, with their range of young players who should – with the exception of Madrid-bound Nuri Sahin – stay with the side for the foreseeable future.
Second-placed Leverkusen too are clear winners: coming second in the Bundesliga and beating Bayern in the race for the Champions League starting positions is a great showing.
Some of the “smaller” teams are worthy of the winner title, too: Hannover 96, Mainz 05, Nuremberg, Freiburg – all of these teams had an unexpectedly big effect on the league this season and are surprisingly highly placed. I’ll be interested to see how Hannover and Mainz fair on a European level, though.
Other winners are, in my opinion, teams who, although not near the top of the league, aimed to stay in it and managed not to get relegated: look at Kaiserslautern and 1. FC Köln, both of whom stayed up. Kaiserslautern deserve a very special mention, in fact, for keeping their nerve when things got tough and not doing what almost every team did in similar situations – firing their coach. By avoiding chaos, they managed to finish in seventh place, a great result for them.
Another winner is Borussia Mönchengladbach, who looked like they were headed down into the second league. During the winter break, they were languishing at 18, but then the “Colts” (as German football jargon calls them) managed to get going and are now in the play-offs with the possibility of staying put. Nevertheless, a lot is dependent on VfL Bochum’s performance, so it’s too early to say how this will finish.
In terms of individuals, there are some clear winners and losers, too. Mario Gomez, for example, who is a clear winner with 28 goals in one season – and this after the Bayern management almost chased him off with pitchforks claiming that he was cursed with bad luck! Or just look at coach Thomas Tuchel, who turned the Mainz team into an national-quality side and kept the team consistently at fifth place or above. Or Schalke’s world-class Manuel Neuer, who proved again and again that he is the best German goalkeeper around and more than worthy of following Oliver Kahn. And then there’s Marco Reus, Mirko Slomka, Ilkay Gündogan, and plenty more who I could mention but won’t.

Why won’t I? Because the Bundesliga world is not just full of winners, but has losers too, and I want to write about some of them too!
Look at Bayern München, for example, who are losers as soon as they don’t win the league title – I mean, it’s a question of expectations, and everyone expects them to win.
In fact, the real losers of the season are both a good few hundred clicks north of Munich: Eintracht Frankfurt and FC St. Pauli. Of the two, Frankfurt are not only losers, but disappointingly so: they had such a good start to the season and are now going down into the second league – way to manage expectations, boys! Nevertheless, I would have expected better of St. Pauli, too, to be frank. They too did alright in the first half of the season, but the fans started protesting against “commercialisation” and then there were the arguments about coach Stanislawski moving to another team, and the team started to fall apart. St. Pauli just weren’t strong enough to play well under this kind of stress, and so they too are headed down a league. They could have stayed up – the potential was there. Nevertheless, they are dropping with their heads held high.
Other losers are, if you see things my way, the other “big” teams who finished at the bottom end of the league, or just stayed as mediocre as ever – HSV in Hamburg, for example. Wolfsburg, Bremen, Stuttgart and Schalke, too, all had to fight against relegation at points, and all of them got lucky – but all should be playing at a far higher standard.

This makes Schalke a big loser by my calculation: their team was put together to win the league, and didn’t – not even close. They might still win the cup, I suppose, and have been good in the Champions League, but in the process they’ve lost Magath; although he split the squad and the supporters when he was there, they’re lost without him now he’s at Wolfsburg.

A big individual loser this season is Christoph Daum, who lost his aura of invincibility as Frankfurt went down. His career is now as good as over. Michael Ballack, too, is at a dead end: he wanted to really get his teeth into the league at Leverkusen, but injury set him back and it’s now only a matter of time until national coach Joachim Löw pulls the plug on his international ambitions. Wolfsburg’s diva in residence, Diego, is a loser, refusing to go with his team to the decisive match of the season because he wasn’t in the starting line-up. You can’t expect paid-up supporters to put up with that kind of nonsense.

So as you can see, it was a pretty exciting 48th Bundesliga season, and I can hardly wait for the next season (starts 5th August). As ever, the deck will be reshuffled and we’ll have another 10 months until we know who the winners and losers are again.

Sieger und Verlierer dieser Bundesligasaison

Der letzte Spieltag der Saison 2010/2011 ist gespielt. Die 18 Bundesligavereine teilen sich in Gewinner und Verlierer. Meine persönliche Bilanz:

Gewinner:
Natürlich Borussia Dortmund. Der verdiente, überlegene Meister. Mit vielen jungen Spielern, die hoffentlich, von Nuri Sahin abgesehen, der nach Madrid geht, der Borussia auch in der nächsten Spielzeit erhalten bleiben.
Leverkusen als Zweiter ist ebenfalls ein Gewinner. Wer Zweiter in der Bundesliga wird und sich vor den Bayern für die Champions League qualifiziert, gehört in diese Kategorie.
Dann nätürlich die „kleinen“ Vereine Hannover 96, Mainz 05, Nürnberg, Freiburg, die die Liga gewaltig aufmischten und überraschend weit oben stehen. Wollen mal sehen, wie sich Hannover und Mainz in Europa schlagen.
Gewinner sind auch die Teams, die von vornhinein nur den Klassenerhalt ausgegeben hatten und diesen realisierten. Kaiserslautern und der 1. FC Köln schafften dies, wobei man im Falle Kaiserslauterns noch ergänzen muss, dass sie die gesamte Saison über in kritischen Situationen die Nerven behielten und nicht dem vermeintlichen Allheilmittel Trainerwechsel verfielen. Lohn: ein toller siebter Rang.
Ein Sieger ist auch Borussia Mönchengladbach, die schon längst abgestiegen schien. Im Winter abschlagen auf Rang 18, setzten „die Fohlen“ eine Aufholjagd in Gang, die die Chance eröffnet, über die Relegation am nächsten Wochenende die Klasse zu erhalten. Natürlich bleibt in Gladbach nur das Lächeln, wenn der VfL Bochum in zwei Entscheidungsspielen unten gehalten wird.
Auch der Blick auf einzelne Fußballer offenbart Gewinner. Mario Gomez zum Beispiel, der Torschützenkönig der Bundesliga mit 28 Treffern wurde. Vor einem Jahr hätten ihn die Bayern als Chancentod fast noch vom Hof gejagt. Oder Trainer Thomas Tuchel, der in Mainz ein nationales Spitzenteam formte, das in dieser Saison nie schlechter als Rang 5 platziert war. Oder Schalkes Weltklassemann Manuel Neuer, der unter Beweis stellte, dass er der beste deutsche Torwart und ein würdiger Nachfolger von Oliver Kahn im Nationaltor ist. Oder Marco Reus oder Mirko Slomka oder Ilkay Gündogan oder oder oder.

Die Welt besteht aber nicht nur aus Gewinnern. Wo es Sieger gibt, da gibt es auch Verlierer. Gerade in der Bundesliga.
Bayern München wurde nicht Meister und jede Saison ohne Meistertitel ist dort eine verlorene. Jedoch, die Fans anderer Verein werden das differenzierter sehen und eine Spielzeit ohne Bayern-Titel als Gewinn bewerten.
Echte Verlierer sind die Absteiger FC St. Pauli und Eintracht Frankfurt. Natürlich ist die Eintracht die größere Enttäuschung. Abgestürzt nach guter Hinrunde, müssen sich die Hessen in Liga 2 neu sammeln. Aber auch von St. Pauli hätte ich mehr erwartet. Die Hinrunde lief gut. Doch Fanproteste gegen Kommerzialisierung und die Diskussionen um den Wechsel von Trainer Stanislawski trieben einen Tropfen der Missgunst ins hamburgische Freudenhaus-Gebilde. Der Zusammenhalt im Verein bekam Risse und ihn hätte es bedürft, um Grandioses zu leisten. St. Pauli steigt hoch erhobenen Hauptes ab. Doch die Paar Prozent mehr zum Klassenerhalt wären möglich gewesen. Sie wurden nicht ausgeschöpft.
Verlierer sind ansonsten die großen Vereine, die nach oben strebten und nach unten fielen. Mancher blieb einfach im Mittelmaß stecken, wie der HSV. Mancher kämpfte lange gegen den Abstieg: Wolfsburg, Bremen, Stuttgart, Schalke. Für sie ging die Saison glimpflich aus. Es hätte schlimmer kommen können.
Schalke ist deshalb für mich ein Verlierer, weil der Kader auf Bundesligaerfolg (Meisterschaft?) zusammengestellt wurde und dort enttäuschte. Allerdings können die Schalker die Spielzeit noch mit dem Pokalsieg retten und überzeugten in der Champions League. Mit Schalke verlor auch Zampano Magath, der Fans und Spieler gefühlsmäßig spaltete und nach dem Blitzwechsel zu Wolfsburg fast verzweifelte.

Schwer gezeichnet geht Christoph Daum aus der Saison, der sein Magier-Image mit dem Eintracht-Abstieg verloren hat und nicht mehr tragbar ist. Auf das Abstellgleis geraten ist Michael Ballack, der in Leverkusen voll angreifen wollte, aber von Verletzungen zurückgeworfen nun die Ausmusterung durch Bundestrainer Joachim Löw erwartet. Und schließlich Wolfsburgs Diva Diego, der beleidigt die existenziell wichtige Reise zur entscheidenden Partie seiner Mannschaft verweigerte, weil er nicht von Anfang an spielen durfte. So ein Typ ist keinem zahlenden Fan mehr zuzumuten.

Es war eine spannende, nie langweilige 48. Spielzeit der Fußball-Bundesliga. Am 5. August geht es von vorne los. Mit neuen Gewinnern und Verlierern.

From the local park to Qatar

The footballing world spent much of last week on tenterhooks waiting for news about the World Cup hosts for 2018 and 2022, and after the decision was made known, there were plenty of heated discussions: whilst Russia at least has Moscow, St. Petersburg and Lew Jaschin in terms of football culture, Qatar is an empty, baking-hot hole that has not yet earned a place in the football World Atlas. Some jokers came up with the word Qatar-strophe to describe the decisions, while anyone who took a serious look at the proceedings worked out precisely why these two countries won: they offered Fifa the best share of the profits.


Nevertheless, I spent much of the time thinking about another aspect of these far-off championships: who is going to be the star of the 2022 German side?

First off, it probably won’t be Michael Ballack, who’ll be 45 at the time. He might still be playing, though, if he hasn’t managed to get himself an international trophy by that stage… I can’t imagine Bastian Schweinsteiger staying on to 2022 in order to lift the cup, though – at 37? That would too old, too. It’s quite possible that the German World-Cup-Star 2022 is as yet undiscovered, a little 10 year-old playing with his mates in the local park – all jumpers for goal posts and getting yelled at by mum to come in for dinner. Meanwhile, dad is already dreaming of his son being the next Maradona.

Another possibility, however, is that the German World-Cup-Star 2022 might be one of the players who had their first international game against Sweden in November. There were the Mainz players Holtby and Schürrle, for example, or Schmelzer, Hummels, Großkreutz and Götze from Dortmund. None of these lads is over 22 at the moment; any of them might be at the peak of their footballing powers in Moscow or Doha.

Nevertheless, it’s a long way to go, both in years and in terms of quality, as Holtby and Schürrle made clear on the 15th match day of this season. Their team Mainz 05 lost 1:2 to Frankfurt, and although Schürrle was the one who pulled a goal back, Holtby was only subbed in in the final minutes. Mainz lost on a penalty that was, if you ask me, not justified. Whatever the case, however, this was no world-class performance.

Dortmund, however, are on world-beating form. Borussia have already taken the title of best team in the 2010 leg of the season, and hammered Nuremburg 2:0. Defender Mats Hummels, currently the new hope for the national side, scored one of the goals. His team, however, is already at the top of its game, and at the top of the league with a 10 point lead on the nearest rival.

Despite this, there is a lack of young German striking talent, both at Mainz and Dortmund – and anywhere else, really. Out of the 19 goals scored on this day of play, only 3 were put past the post by players eligible for the German national side: Schürrle, Helmes (Leverkusen) and Hanke (Hannover). Hang on a moment, though! No need to panic! I’ve got a son outside in the garden practicing on a goal marked with my wife’s plant pots. I need to start paying more attention to his game: I’ve still got 12 years to make him into the next Pelé!

The way through a minefield

Last week must have been difficult for all of you Bundesliga junkies: the season had just got going, and suddenly there was a pause for international games; and they weren’t even high-adrenaline games, either. We were forced into watching teams like Denmark, Belgium and Azerbaijan. That’s all over now, though: play started again on the weekend – and if you’re anything like me, you couldn’t wait!

After all, what is the point of all these silly international games? They give you nothing but trouble. Injuries, for example, with Bremen’s Per Mertesacker being back-handedly brought to the floor by an Azerbaijani player, Dzavadov; now “Merte”, as he’s known, was forced to sit out the exciting game this weekend against Bayern München. To add insult to his injury, the referee in the international game didn’t even have the decency to dole out a yellow card to Dzavadov for his wandering elbows. They should get the video footage out: he deserves a red and, if you ask me, should be on a match-ban until Merte is fit again.

Nevertheless, Bremen held their own without Per Mertesacker, mainly thanks to the Frenchman Mikael Silvestre. Anyone hoping to see Bayern play their best was disappointed: the two top-teams finished the game on 0:0, with the only real excitement having come before the starting whistle as Franz Beckenbauer fans sung “Happy Birthday” to him on occasion of his 65th!

Excitement has to come from other quarters; from the swathes of new international signings like Ribéry, Robben, Raul, van Nistelrooy, Diego and the debutants of the third match-day, Silvestre, Wesley, Camoranesi and Huntelaar. Then again, this more embarrassing than exciting: how do you pronounce these guys’ names? Fans and reporters alike are feeling their way through a minefield: just how do you pronounce the double-A in Huntelaar? Things don’t get easier with time, as the example of Wolfsburg’s top goal-scorer Grafite shows: German commentators still can’t make their mind up if he’s pronounced Graffiti, Graphite or Grafish.

Regardless of any linguistic difficulties, however, Huntelaar did not disappoint on the field, running himself ragged for his new side Schalke. He couldn’t secure them a victory, though, and the biggest-spending side in Bundesliga left Hoffenheim with a 0:2 defeat and the continuing embarrassment of being in the relegation zone of the results table, joined by Diego’s employers Wolfsburg and Stuttgart, who signed the other new boy, Camoranesi.

Meanwhile, Micheal Ballack too is on a run of bad luck. Having missed the World Cup due to injury, he’s now not playing in the qualifiers for the European Cup, either. On the weekend, he managed to get himself a shin fracture in the 2:2 draw between his side, Leverkusen, and Hannover. Six weeks sick-leave. It looks like his decline is continuing.

Part of the problem for a lot of unsuccessful sides this weekend was the pause in proceedings due to the international games. Teams that had settled into a good rhythm were suddenly seen struggling. Both Borussia Mönchengladbach and 1. FC Kaiserslautern had been unbeaten, with Borussia even having played their Rhenish rivals Leverkusen into 6:3 oblivion. Now they are playing poorly, getting beaten by Frankfurt by 4 goals to 0. Kaiserslautern, who just two weeks ago beat reigning champions Bayern München 2:0 came away from their local Rhineland-Palatinate rivals Mainz hurting thanks to a 1:2 defeat.

And what else happened on the weekend? Wolfsburg lost to Borussia Dortmund, with the Wolves being somehow reminiscent of the English national 11 under Steve McClaren – i.e. luckless. Hamburg played disappointingly against Nuremburg and drew 1:1, whilst Freiburg surprised Stuttgart with a 2:1 triumph. Lukas Podolski, meanwhile, finally reminded us why he might be suitable for the German national team by helping his side Cologne to a 1:0 win against St. Pauli.

And now that we’ve got the Bundesliga up-to-date, I thought we’d take a quick look at two former Bundesliga players now in Spain. Both Mesut Özil and Sami Khedira looked convincing in Real Madrid’s 1:0 victory against Osasuna, with Özil being crowned king by the press. Khedira, meanwhile, was mentioned by the trainer Mourinho. Bayern manager Christian Nerlinger admitted that both players had been on his list of ones to watch; he couldn’t sign them, however, because the board at Munich was unsure as to how they would stand up at the very highest level of international competition. Well, now we know: very, very well. We also know how all of Bayern’s other signings over the last couple of years have managed: Mario Gomez, Edson Braafheid, Anatoliy Tymoshchuk, Jan Schlaudraff, Andreas Görlitz, Christian Lell – see my point?

Anyone still interested in the correct pronunciation of Huntelaar, by the way?

Die Krux mit fremden Namen und Länderspielpausen

Bundesligajunkies, die Pause ist vorbei! Kaum hatte die neue Saison angefangen, schon gab es ständig diese Länderspielpausen. Fußball auf Sparflamme. Dänemark, Belgien, Aserbaidschan – jetzt ist es mal gut. Ich will Bundesliga sehen. Freitags bis Sonntags. Mit neun heißen Duellen an einem Spieltag.

Denn was bringt die Länderspielerei? Verletzungen! Wie die von Per Mertesacker. Vom Aserbaidschaner Dzavadov hinterlistig zu Boden gestreckt, verpasste „Merte“ ausgerechnet den Schlager Bayern München gegen Werder Bremen am Wochenende. Ein Skandal, dass der Schiedsrichter nicht einmal die gelbe Karte für den Ellenbogenschlag zückte. Das hätte Rot geben müssen für den Übeltäter! Mein klares Votum für den Videobeweis und Rot-Sperren für den Sünder bis das Opfer wieder in der Lage ist Fußball zu spielen

Bremen hielt sich auch ohne Per Mertesacker, dafür mit dem Franzosen Mikael Silvestre, gut. Wer auf die große Bayern-Show gehofft hatte, wurde enttäuscht. 0:0 ging das Spitzenspiel aus, das seinen Höhepunkt vor der Partie erlebte, als die Zuschauer zu Franz Beckenbauers 65tem Geburtstag „Happy Birthday“ anstimmten. Ein Hoch auf den „Kaiser“!

Schöne neue Bundesliga-Welt, gespickt mit internationalen Stars. Ribéry, Robben, Raul, Van Nistelrooy, Diego und neu am 3. Spieltag Silvestre, Wesley, Camoranesi und Huntelaar. Doch da fangen die Probleme an. Wie spricht man die Namen aus? Fans wie Reporter grübeln. Keiner will sich blamieren. Huntelaar? Chuntelaar? Hüntelaar? Seit drei Jahren spielt zum Beispiel Wolfsburgs Top-Torjäger Grafite in der Bundesliga. Doch die Namensaussprache gibt bis heute Rätsel auf: Grafité? Grafit? Grafitsch? Alles schon gehört.

Huntelaar jedenfalls enttäuschte nicht in seinem ersten Spiel für Schalke in Hoffenheim. Doch mit einem Sieg wurde es dennoch nichts: 0:2. Und so rangiert Schalke trotz Millioneninvestitionen nach drei Spieltagen auf einem Abstiegsplatz, flankiert von Diegos Wolfsburgern und Camoranesis Stuttgartern.

Vom Pech verfolgt bleibt Michael Ballack. Die WM verletzungsbedingt verpasst, von EM-Qualifikationspflichten bis auf weiteres entbunden. Jetzt in Hannover beim 2:2 seiner Leverkusener mit einer Fraktur im Schienbeinkopf ausgewechselt. Sechs Wochen Pause. Ballacks Stern sinkt.

Dass eine Länderspielpause einer erfolgreichen Mannschaft den Rhythmus rauben kann, erlebten Borussia Möchengladbach und der 1. FC Kaiserslautern. Nach zwei Spieltagen noch ungeschlagen, setzte es Niederlagen am dritten. Mönchengladbach hatte vor zwei Wochen noch in Leverkusen sensationell gespielt und 6:3 gewonnen. Jetzt agierten die Gladbacher indiskutabel und verloren gegen Eintracht Frankfurt 0:4. Kaiserslautern reiste mit der Empfehlung eines 2:0-Sieges gegen Bayern München nach Mainz. Das Rheinland-Pfalz-Derby stand an. Doch trotz Führung mussten sich die „roten Teufel“ dem Nachbarn aus der Landeshauptstadt mit 1:2 geschlagen geben.

Und sonst? Wolfsburg in Dortmund 0:2 unterlegen. Der VfL erinnert an die Nationalelf Englands damals unter Trainer Steve McClaren: Glücklos. Hamburg enttäuschte beim 1:1 gegen Nürnberg. Freiburg schockte den VfB Stuttgart mit einem 2:1-Triumph. Lukas Podolski zeigte endlich einmal eine länderspielreife Leistung und führte Köln zum 1:0-Sieg über St. Pauli.

Noch der neugierige Blick rüber nach Spanien zu Mesut Özil und Sami Khedira: Beide überzeugten beim 1:0 von Real Madrid gegen Osasuna. Özil wurde hernach von der Presse als Geigenvirtuose gepriesen, Khedira heimste das Lob seines Trainers Mourinho ein. Bayern-Manager Christian Nerlinger hat in der vergangenen Woche geäußert, beide deutschen Nationalspieler hätten auch auf der Beobachtungsliste des FC Bayern München gestanden. Von einer Verpflichtung habe man aber abgesehen, weil die Verantwortlichen nicht sicher waren, dass beide auf höchstem internationalen Niveau bestehen könnten. Ach ja? Ganz im Gegensatz natürlich zu den Top-Bayern-Einkäufen der letzten Jahre Mario Gomez, Edson Braafheid, Anatoliy Tymoshchuk, Jan Schlaudraff, Andreas Görlitz, Christian Lell…?

Watch out! Musical chairs and surprise wins! 2nd match day

Come on, quick! Now’s the time to get rid of players you don’t need and then go and get some new ones! Why? Because after the qualifying games for the Champions League and the European Cup, it’s clear that all the German teams involved have made it into the group phase of the continental competitions. There’s new money available, the first games are out of the way and decisions about location have been made: so now it’s a game of musical chairs, with Bremen hoping Silvestre will set down on their seat, Hannover wanting to tempt Hajnal from Dortmund, Wolfsburg grabbing Diego and Demichelis looking to sit down anywhere except at Munich – he doesn’t get along well with the trainer. Really, any team with ambitions to take the Champions’ League should be looking to sign him: after all, ex-Bayern defenders are as close as you can get to guaranteed title success (see Lucio at Inter Milan last season).

The most active player in transfer musical chairs is Schalke 04. With the amount of fluctuation in the squad (26 changes!), it’s hard to believe that they were vice-champions last year. You’d think that coach Magath would just sit back and let a successful team have another go, but at the moment, I’m not at all sure whether the team we saw this week will still be there in seven days time! It’s certainly making life difficult for autograph-hunters, who are best advised to hang around airport departure areas if they’re looking to get signatures from players like Tore Reginussen (Tromsö – Schalke – Lecce).

The latest Schalke-signings are a Romanian named Ciprian Deac and the wing defender Hans Sarpei from Bayer Leverkusen. Meanwhile, negotiations are at fever pitch surrounding Klaas-Jan Huntelaar from Milan and Rafael van der Vaart, currently at Real Madrid, where Schalke have been faithful customers of late. The only question is, whose money is it that they are spending? We can only hope that Magath still has a close eye on the bank balance – and on the wording of the contracts. Albert Streit, for example, who was signed by Schalke on an easily misinterpretable contract is still laughing all the way to the bank.

Anyway, all this cash flying around doesn’t seem to have had much effect on the performance of the teams involved. Just look at Schalke, and wealthy counterparts Wolfsburg, on the second match day this season. They both played poorly, with Schalke losing 1:2 to Hannover. The newly-formed defence based on Sarpei and Metzelder was weak; Schalke haven’t lost their first two matches since 1987, and this was the year in which they went down a league. My tip for Magath: it’s a good idea to have a whole functioning team before the start of the season.

Meanwhile Wolfsburg, who’d got the cheque-book out for Diego, did actually manage to make a good start and were 3:0 ahead of Mainz after just 30 minutes. Nevertheless, Mainz coach Thomas Tuchel just didn’t give up and his team fought back: 1:3, 2:3, 3:3, 4:3. This should prove more than anything else the old adage that “money can’t buy goals”, and whilst Chelsea and Madrid might seem to contradict that rule, it’s still the case that money doesn’t always win.

There was even more corroborating evidence for this in the form of Kaiserslautern’s astonishing victory against Bayern Munich. It was a big fight with a lot of effort and a bit of luck that got the newly-promoted players their victory against last season’s champions. The man of the match was without doubt Ivo Ilicevic. In the space of two minutes, he’d scored one goal and laid the groundwork for another. This has put him on the list of players Bayern want to sign for the sole reason that it will harm their opponents.

“We had a great talk and he’s on the right path. The aim is to get him back to top fitness; until them, we won’t nominate him for the first European Cup games.” That’s what Joachim Löw said last Friday about Michael Ballack, now at Leverkusen. The coach doesn’t seem to be convinced yet. My advice to you Michael, try and get back on track in the everyday matches: that 3:6 home defeat against Mönchengladbach just won’t do; it makes you and Hyypiä look less like old masters and more like stumbling pensioners!

What else is going on then? Well, the award for caring and sharing goes to the Bremen trainer Thomas Schaaf. He managed to integrate the new player, Marko Arnautovic, into the successful squad, and got the thanks he was looking for in the form of two goals in the 4:2 victory against Cologne. This was, by the way, one of the only two home wins this time round, with Kaiserslautern being the other team to win in their own stadium. No draws, by the way, and seven away wins, breaking all Bundesliga records in this category. What a match day!

Vorsicht Wildwechsel: Bundesliga, Spieltag 2

Los, los, jetzt schnell neue Spieler holen. Überflüssige loswerden. Die Transferperiode endet am 31. August! Nach den Qualifizierungsspielen in Champions und Europa League ist klar, dass alle deutschen Starter den Sprung in die Gruppenphasen der europäischen Wettbewerbe geschafft haben. Frisches Geld ist da. Die ersten Spiele sind gespielt und Standortbestimmungen gemacht. Jetzt wird das Wechselkarussell kräftig angeworfen. Bremen will Silvestre, Hannover Hajnal von Dortmund. Wolfsburg holt Diego, Demichelis will weg aus München. Der fühlt sich von Trainer van Gaal gedemütigt. Da sollte eigentlich jeder europäische Topverein mit Champions League-Siegambitionen zugreifen wollen. Bayerische Ex-Verteidiger garantieren Titel. Siehe Lucio letzte Saison mit Inter Mailand.

In der ersten Reihe des Transfertheaters sitzt Schalke 04. Kaum zu glauben, dass Schalke letzte Saison Vizemeister wurde. Der gesamte Kader wird umgekrempelt. Bislang 26 Wechsel! Bei der magathschen Austauschwut bin ich mir unsicher, ob die Mannschaft vom 2. Spieltag nicht am 3. schon verkauft ist. Ein Horror für die Autogrammjäger, die Spielern wie Tore Reginiussen (von Tromsö nach Schalke nach Lecce) wahrscheinlich im Transitbereich des Flughafens ein Autogramm abringen müssen.

Aktuell verpflichtet wurden ein Rumäne namens Ciprian Deac und Außenverteidiger Hans Sarpei von Bayer Leverkusen. Heiß gehandelt werden noch Klaas-Jan Huntelaar aus Mailand und Rafael van der Vaart von Real Madrid. Dort ist Schalke ja bislang ein guter Einkäufer gewesen. Fragt sich nur mit wessen Geld? Bleibt zu hoffen, dass bei all den wilden Wechseln Felix Magath den Überblick behält und sich keine teuren Missverständnisse leistet. Albert Streit lacht heute noch über seine Verpflichtung und kassiert eine Millionengage in Schalkes Reserve.

Doch was hat‘s gebracht? Wie schlugen sich die Finanzinvestoren Schalke und Wolfsburg am zweiten Spieltag? Erbärmlich. Schalke unterlag im Heimspiel Hannover mit 1:2. Die neu formierte Defensive um Sarpei und Metzelder schwach. Schalke verlor zuletzt 1987 die ersten beiden Saisonspiele – am Ende stiegen sie ab. Ein homogenes, eingespieltes Team sollte man eben am besten schon vor dem Saisonstart haben.

Wolfsburg legte mit Neuerwerbung Diego brasilianisch-offensiv los. Nach 30 Minuten 3:0. Doch diese Mainzer, mit ihrem gerade 37-jährigen Trainer Thomas Tuchel, wollten einfach nicht aufgeben. 1:3, 2:3, 3:3, 4:3 für Mainz am Ende. Ein Sprichwort besagte einst: „Geld schießt keine Tore.“ In der globalisierten Fußballwelt der Chelseas und Madrids gilt dieser Lehrspruch nicht mehr uneingeschränkt. Doch zeigt sich: „Geld gewinnt nicht immer.“

Das bewies auch die Überraschung des Spieltags. Kaiserslautern besiegt Bayern München 2:0. Großer Kampf, großer Einsatz, auch großes Glück in einigen Situationen, und der Aufsteiger gewann gegen den Meister. Mann des Spiels: Ivo Ilicevic. Ein Tor, eine Vorbereitung, innerhalb von zwei Minuten. Steht bei Bayern jetzt auf der Liste der Akteure, die nur verpflichtet werden müssen, um dem Gegner zu schaden.

„Wir hatten ein gutes Gespräch. Er ist auf einem guten Weg. Er soll zu seiner optimalen Form zurückfinden. Er wird für die ersten Spiele der EM-Qualifikation nicht nominiert.“ Joachim Löw am vergangenen Freitag über Michael Ballack. Lieber Michael, 13. Spieltag gegen Bayern Schweinsteiger und Lahm ins Krankenhaus grätschen. Denn sonst wird es nichts mehr mit der Nationalmannschaftskarriere. Ein klares Bekenntnis des Bundestrainers hört sich anders an. Wobei, vielleicht erstmal in der Bundesliga Land sehen. Mönchengladbach kam in die BayArena. Krach, bumm, 3:6. So schnell wird aus der viel gerühmten, erfahrenen Leverkusener Klassemannschaft um Ballack und Hyypiä eine Rentnerkombo.

Und sonst? Sozialarbeiter des Tages ist Bremens Trainer Thomas Schaaf. Er hat den Bremer Neuzugang Marko Arnautovic nach dessen schwierigem Beginn und Streit mit arrivierten Kollegen sozialisiert und integriert. Der dankt es mit zwei Toren beim 4:2-Sieg gegen Köln. Übrigens einer von nur zwei Heimsiegen an diesem Spieltag. Der andere gelang Kaiserslautern. Kein Unentschieden. Sieben Auswärtssiege. So viele wie noch nie in der Bundesliga-Geschichte. Wild!
